Make the Call
We urgently need your help to defeat the Carried Interest proposal in Congress that would devastate commercial real estate and its related industries by more than doubling the tax on development. This is a bill that affects everyone in commercial real estate from developers to owners to managers.
The Bottom Line: Fewer Buildings Developed = Fewer Buildings Managed = Fewer Jobs
Please give us five minutes of your time today to call the offices of your Senators and Representative to tell them that the carried interest tax will threaten millions of good paying jobs that are made possible by real estate development projects. We need to flood Capitol Hill immediately with calls as the bill is scheduled for vote early next week. Here are the three easy steps:
Step 1 – Find Your Representative/Senators
If you don’t know your Representative or Senator, you can find them at these sites:
- Find your Representative
- Find your Senators
Step 2 – Make the Call
Call your elected officials’ offices and tell them:
BOMA Member: Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to the appropriate office.
Receptionist: Hi, thanks for calling Senator/Representative (name) office, how my I help you?
BOMA Member: Hi, may I please speak with Senator/Representative’s (name) Tax Staffer.
Receptionist: May I ask who’s calling?
BOMA Member: My name is (your name) and I’m with (your company) in (your town), (your state).
Receptionist: And what’s this in regards to?
BOMA Member: The Carried Interest Tax proposal.
Tax Staffer: Hi this is the tax staffer, how may I help you?
BOMA Member: Hi, how are you, my name is (your name) and I’m with (your company) in (your town), (your state). I manage/operate/own a building(s) that is/are (your sq. ft.) that employs (number of people).
I’m calling to ask the senator/representative to oppose the proposal to double the tax on carried interest, which is commonly used in commercial real estate development. You may have heard that it’s a Wall Street issue, but it’s really a Main Street issue that’s bad for our state’s real estate market because it will further hurt job creation by hindering economic development. The state and local governments will not collect as much tax revenue either because it will reduce the number of real estate transactions. If you could please let (Senator/Representative) know that the carried interest tax increase is bad for our state’s commercial real estate market and economy, I’d really appreciate it. Thank you.
This is a GUIDE to a conversation with a Capitol Hill staff person. If they don’t pick up, simply leave a message stating your name and contact info along with your position opposing the Carried Interest tax increase. The main point is to let Congress know that doubling the tax on commercial real estate, especially in this market, is bad for the industry, job creation and the economy. Lighting up the switchboard of an office has more impact than flooding their Outlook in-box.
